Desktop Support Engineer (Bristol, VA)


The Desktop Support Engineer role is to provide a point of contact for end users to receive support and maintenance within the organization's desktop computing environment. This includes installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading all hardware and equipment (including but not limited to PC, terminals, printers and scanners) to ensure optimal workstation performance. The person will also troubleshoot problem areas (in person, by telephone, or via remote access) in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end-user assistance where required.


  • Maintain security and integrity of all networks and systems
  • Image and deploy new desktop systems
  • Maintain inventory of all systems
  • Maintain system printers
  • Address Help Desk tickets regarding hardware, software and networking
  • Conduct remote troubleshooting
  • Guide users with simple, step-by-step instructions
  • Maintain patch level of all systems and devices
  • Maintain Phone/network cable runs, repairs & terminations
  • Direct unresolved issues to the next level of support personnel
  • Create technical documentation and manuals
  • Develop recommendations and project plans for system upgrades and enhancements
  • Continual learning and application of skills and resources

QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience, Competencies and Education

  • Proven work experience as a Desktop Support Engineer
  • Hands-on experience with Windows Operating systems and Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Server applications (SQL Server, SharePoint, Exchange) a plus
  • Working knowledge of office automation products and computer peripherals such as printers, scanners and mobile devices
  • Knowledge of network security practices and anti-virus programs
  • Ability to perform remote troubleshooting and provide clear instructions
  • Ability to work closely with vendors
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving, multitasking and communication skills
  • Proven ability to maintain a positive and support attitude while working in a fast-paced and ongoing-changing environment
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others in a team-based environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems or relevant field
