Maintenance Technician (Bristol, VA)

JOB PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for all mechanical repair, installation, and troubleshooting of equipment and facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF MECHANIC B:

  • Installs, maintains, trouble shoots, tests, and repairs plant machinery, systems and components, some of which include: complex mechanical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, pumps, motors, steam boilers, running cutoff saws, fire system devices, building controls, electrical wiring, resistive heaters, receptacles, switch boxes, CNC’s, lighting fixtures, variable frequency drives, along with other electrical and mechanical machinery, plant and utility systems;
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces piping and fittings for oil, natural gas, water, steam, compressed air, heating and plumbing lines, and systems for equipment such as hydraulic compressors, air compressors, pumps, and boilers;
  • Carries out emergency, planned, and preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment and machinery as requested.
  • Responds to emergency calls that are a result of mechanical/electrical failure both during and after regular hours of work;
  • Ensures that all work is done according to standard practices, state electrical code, and local building codes;
  • Makes recommendations and determines quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs, and projects and assists with proper costing and planning;
  • Liaisons with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers, and other departments on maintenance and project work as required;
  • Accurately completes and documents work orders and time sheets prior to submission to supervisor;
  • Provides written reports on any inspections and/or tests and makes recommendations to improve performance;
  • Maintains clean and orderly conditions in all working areas, including shop, vehicle and toolboxes; Ensures duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner while observing all safety, environmental, and quality policies and regulations;

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF MECHANIC C:

  • Training position while learning all duties of a Mechanic B
  • “C” position cannot independently perform skilled and professional mechanical work

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF MECHANIC A:

  • Perform all duties of a Mechanic B
  • “A” position has ability to independently perform skilled and professional mechanical work
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary maintenance skills to complete projects
  • Performs preventive maintenance on a continuous schedule

QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience, Competencies and Education

  • High school education with vocational training
  • Computer literate
  • Mechanic C: One (1) year of experience in the mechanical or electrical trade
  • Mechanic B: Five (5) years of experience in the mechanical trade with a minimum 2 years in a building maintenance environment
  • Mechanic A: ten (10) years mechanical experience
  • Display technically inquisitive aptitude

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB: This position requires that the employee be able to perform the following physical requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Ability and dexterity in use of various manual and powered hand tools;
  • Must be able to use various electrical test equipment such as ammeter, voltmeters, and ohm meter;
  • Work safely with high voltage power systems and with pole mounted, ceiling mounted, and moving equipment;
  • Occasional periods of high levels of physical exertion. This includes, but is not limited to, heavy lifting (up to 40 pounds), climbing, crouching, balancing, reaching, stooping, carrying, working in confined spaces, and above or below normal temperatures;
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position requires that the employee be able to work effectively in a work environment involving:

  • Fast-paced Manufacturing
  • Exposure to dust, resin, and chemicals
  • Not climate controlled
