Case Study: Fiberglass Structural Components used in Fajardo, Puerto Rico
The Fajardo Waste Water Treatment Plant in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, was recently outfitted with a huge variety of fiberglass structural components from Strongwell.
The new facility features solid covers, odor control covers, ladders and handrail, various equipment enclosures, pipe bridges, pipe supports, and numerous crossover platforms. Each structure was fabricated using EXTREN® beams, SAFRAIL™ square handrail and SAFPLANK® fiberglass decking and/or DURADEK® grating (currently DURAGRID®).

The project was originally designed and specified in aluminum. The owners, however, were concerned about two things: the resistance of aluminum to the corrosive environment and the potential theft of the expensive metal due to the plant's remote location. Strongwell was able to offer a cost-competitive FRP solution that alleviated both of these concerns. Along with being cost efficient and corrosion resistant, the project managers were pleased that the FRP platforms, supports, handrails and covers could all be purchased from a single manufacturer.
